Golden’s co-founders Kylie Dorotic and Alicia McKimm both studied interior design and met while at university in Melbourne. ‘We knew working together we would produce a richer quality of work, and make for a much more enjoyable day-to-day experience,’ Kylie tells. ‘Today, Golden reflects the refinement of our shared belief in spaces that go beyond the aesthetic – interiors that are timeless, high quality, holistic, functional and beautifully detailed,’ adds Alicia.

The duo’s latest residential project – a four bedroom, five bathroom home reimagined for a young family – does just that, pairing contemporary elegance with luxurious warmth and durability… plus a hint of coastal charm. In a nod to the shoreside locale, The Esplanade features a considered palette of colours and textures, from natural stone to warm timber, creating an effortless flow between vast zones.

Working within the bones of an existing late twentieth-century build, Golden teamed up with Teede Building Group to complete the project late last year. ‘A key structural transformation was the removal of the existing ornate staircase and opening up each level with a unique vertical balustrade, a grand circular form, hugged by curved concrete walls,’ details Kylie. ‘Our design intent for this new staircase was to mimic the textural elements of a seashell. The space is now flooded with light and views through each level and affords multiple beautiful moments from every angle!’

While the grand foyer and show-stopping staircase are standouts, Alicia also highlights the beautiful large-scale, sculptural furniture gracing the living area. There’s an iconic Living Divani Sofa, a custom silk rug by Halcyon Lake and a bespoke four-metre long dining table from Lowe Furniture. While diffused pendant lighting by Flos illuminates glimmers of brass and the textured linens used throughout, bringing a softness to the interiors.

Kylie and Alicia also considered the coastal surroundings from a practical sense, opting for ‘robust materials that allowed for an organic feel’ while also being low-maintenance, at the clients’ request. The result is a stunning home, cleverly reimagined for family life by the bay, both when indoors and out!
